Victorian road authority VicRoads has announced a new website that shows road users traffic alerts and road closures in real-time.

The site, which for the moment will compliment the previously existing VicRoads traffic information portal, is now live for Victorians and offers a map-based overview of all road incidents in the state and looks a whole lot better than its predecessor.

According to the organisation, widespread flooding in the state during January showed a heightened need for a central location providing updates on road conditions with more than half a million visits coming during the period to the older text-based site.

“The new VicRoads ‘Road Closures and Traffic Alerts’ website will be Victoria’s official source for road closure information during emergencies,” Minister for Roads Terry Mulder said in a statement.

“Natural disasters have presented many challenges across Victoria and Australia over the past 12 months, and it is critical that the community receives accurate and timely information about road closures.”

According to Mulder, the site cost $924,000 to build and will enable Victorians to gain access to traffic information from wherever they are as well as viewing the location of any incidents that may impact upon their driving.

“People will be able to find out which roads are closed on interactive maps in real time either online or on their smart phone,” he said.

Data is fed in real-time into the site from a number of organisations, including Victoria Police, the Country Fire Authority and local government or councils.
