Review: Magika

Magicka 3

You’re a wizard. Do you want to just just blast away with a magic arrow or go all Samual L Jackson on the badguys?

Of course you do, and there is a game for a Mighty Wizard like yourself. Magika!

After being trained by the wizard Vlad (who is not a vampire), and learning the basics of magic after one of your mage friends screws up a spell, blowing up the floor, you are off to save the world!

This is actually a refreshing game, tongue in cheek and very flexible. The magic is powerful, and you can create effects based on combining elements (for example a fire ball spell is a mix of fire and earth). The ability for you to project a lot of damage (on both your foes and unwary bystanders) is one of the key elements of the game.

If you are looking for state of the art graphics, this is not your game. It is a lookdown view, similar to the Ultima Online, but the style, colours and theme of the game is very appealing.

There is now a PvP component, and the game can also be played in Co-Op. I have yet to try multi-player myself, but Brian Brushwood over at TWiT stated it adds a whole new level to the game (when played in co-op).

Reservoir Mages

Given that the world seems to be split with FPS and Fantasy MMO, this is a game that can be soloed, played with up to 5 players, and you can be as serious or silly as you want. You can even heal and reserect other players, so if little Kenny walks into a massive flame jet, he can quickly rejoin the game (and be the but of the jokes until the next person dies).

The mix of humour, mayhem and carnage is quite refreshing, and the gameplay is great. Well worth a look.
