Nintendo has announced the next generation console (code name Project Cafe): Wii U.

Sorry, that’s its real name.

The new console is High Definition (1080p), making this this the first Nintendo console designed for newer HD TV sets.

The controller looks like a love child between a Gameboy and an iPad. A LED touch screen (standard Def) will offer new ways to interact with games, when developers catch up. I can see many uses of he touch screen, especially in RPG games and combat games as a Inventory system or secondary interface.

The Wii controllers are compatable with the Wii U, and Wii games will be compatible with the new console as well.

I still have issues with the name.

Twit.TV has a look at the console at E3. You can listen to the audio podcast here featuring Leo Laporte, Brian Brushwood and Glen Rubinstein. A video will follow soon. Pictures and a review can be found over at the Ausgamer site.
