A one-of-a-kind art exhibition has arrived in Melbourne which encourages residents to visit local landmarks and view virtual pieces of artwork.

Art exhibitions have taken on a whole new dimension with the launch of Melbourne’s first augmented-reality (AR) art show.
The art show launched in Sydney last month, and opened in Melbourne over the weekend. Unlike the traditional art show, attendees are required to download a third-party application called Layar Reality Browser to a smartphone running Android, iOS (iPhone) or selected Nokia handsets.
When running the Layar app, viewers point their phone at the locations of the artworks and will see the virtual piece of art display on top of a live view from the rear-facing camera on their device.
Four of the works also have audio attached, adding to the experience while ‘touching’ the art will allow you to view more information about the artist and artwork.
Attendees can follow a map (which can be downloaded here) that shows the locations of the virtual pieces of art, with popular attractions including the Melbourne Museum, Captain Cook’s cottage and Southbank.
Artists include Lily & Honglei, Alison Locke, Mark Skwarek, Stuart Campbell and exhibition curator Warren Armstrong.
