The Gmail team has just added four new themes to the collection, well three if you don’t count a random selector.
The new themes, namely Turf, High Score, Random and Orcas Island are all now available in the Gmail themes directory here.
In typical Google style there’s a story behind each theme, and Jake Knapp a Google UI Designer along with Manu Cornet a Software Engineer have a dialogue about the background of each theme, and why they have been designed for the Gmail gallery.
So what is each theme based on? High Score takes you back in time to a certain game (you’ll know it when you see it), Turf is as it sounds and all grassy, Random selects a random theme each time you load Gmail, and Orcas Island is, well, a picture of Orcas Island.
None of the themes are exactly stunningly beautiful, and one or two even resemble some Google Chrome themes which were recently released last month. Personally I think the best option for the moment still seems to be creating your own.
